Hofstra University Students Volunteer at the 2016 Presidential Debate
Almost 400 students worked as volunteers in areas ranging from media and production to credentialing and ticket distribution during the first presidential debate between candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, held at Hofstra University on Sept. 26, 2016. Along with a month-long series of panels discussions, lectures and performances on important election issues, the volunteer opportunity provided a once-in-a-lifetime educational experience that inspired students to engage in the democratic process and embrace their responsibility as citizens and voters. Hofstra University is the only institution in the nation to host three consecutive presidential debates, and its 2016 debate was the most widely watched in American history.

The pursuit of justice and the importance of practicing grace in these challenging times were the predominant themes expressed by Commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient Reverend Liz Walker, veteran television journalist and current Pastor of Roxbury Presbyterian Church, and honorary degree recipient Patricia McGuire, the longtime President of Trinity Washington University.

Assumption College has announced that 561 students named to the College's undergraduate Dean's List for the spring 2016 semester. To earn a spot on the Dean's List, Assumption students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 for a five-class, 15-credit semester. 693 Receive a Degree at Assumption College Commencement
693 students received a degree, including 463 Bachelor of Arts degrees; 187 graduate studies degrees and certificates; and 43 Continuing and Career, during Assumption College's 99th Commencement exercises on Saturday, May 7. Carolyn Woo, Ph.D., CEO of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), delivered the commencement address. Honorary degrees were conferred upon Dr. Woo; Dr. James O'Connell, president of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program; and Assumption alumni Dr. Fred Bayon '65, Board Chair Emeritus, and Michael Tsotsis '71, Trustee Emeritus. Francesco C. Cesareo, Ph.D., president of Assumption College, congratulated the graduates and reminded them that the values they have had instilled in them over the last four years are ones that will continue to shape their lives and guide them as they serve their purpose in the world.

Sociology Honor Society Inducts New Members
The Assumption College Department of Sociology, Criminology and Anthropology has announced that six new members were inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, the international honor society in sociology on Wednesday, April 25. "We are excited to welcome the new members to Assumption's chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta," said Richard Gendron, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology and one of the honor society's advisors. "It is with great pride that we recognize this group of students for their hard work, discipline, and love for this field of study." Alpha Kappa Delta was founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California. To be inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, students must be in their junior year, hold an minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0, and rank in the top 35 percent of their class. Eligible students must also complete at least four sociology courses, earning an average GPA of 3.0 or higher in those courses.

History National Honor Society Phi Alpha Theta Inducts New Members
The Assumption College Department of History has announced that 14 Assumption students were inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, the History National Honor Society on Wednesday, April 6. "We are excited to welcome the new members to Assumption's chapter of Phi Alpha Theta," said Mark Z. Christensen, Ph.D., assistant professor of history and the honor society's advisor. "It is with great pride that we recognize this group of students for their hard work, discipline, and love for this field of study." Phi Alpha Theta is a national honor society for undergraduate and graduate students and professors of history. The society has over 350,000 members and 860 local chapters. Assumption College's chapter, Alpha-Epsilon-Rho, was established in 1991. To qualify, undergraduate students must complete a minimum of four courses in history, achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.1 in history and a GPA of 3.0, or better, overall.

Students Present Academic Research at Annual Academic Symposium
More than 100 students presented their original academic research projects at Assumption College's 22nd Annual Undergraduate Symposium, held April 18-19 on the College's Worcester Campus. The undergraduate symposium highlights the research and scholarly achievements of Assumption students, working in collaboration with dedicated faculty mentors. These collaborations represent a model for integrating teaching, original research, and peer review in promoting intellectual development and professional growth. The symposium provides the campus community with the opportunity to gain a greater appreciation of, and applaud, the individual and collective accomplishments of the College's faculty and students.

Seventy Named to Assumption College's 2015-2016 Track and Field Team
The Assumption College Department of Athletics has announced the roster for the 2015-2016 Assumption College Track and Field team, coached by Stacie Wentz. "I'm really happy with how this program has progressed since arriving here two and a half years ago to restructure the cross country and track program," said Wentz. "This year's team is helping us create a firm foundation for future success. We've had multiple national qualifiers in the last two years and the team is working really hard to put on our program on the map not only in the Northeast region but nationally as well." The track and field team opened its season at the Alden Invitational, which was held at Brown University in Providence, RI. The Assumption College women's track and field team broke two indoor school records as the team began the 2015-2016 on a high note.
